Hound is a label rather than a single breed. On adoption listings it usually describes a scent hound mix with Beagle, Coonhound, Foxhound or Plott ancestry, though sighthound types like Greyhounds and Whippets turn up too. Most are medium-sized dogs of roughly 20 to 70 pounds with short, dense coats and long ears, and they commonly live 10 to 14 years.
Hounds were developed to follow a trail for hours, which explains the sniffing, the howling and the stubborn streak. Most are friendly with people and other dogs. In Asheville's hills, that nose means leashed walks and a fence without gaps. Ancestry varies a lot, so the size, energy and voice described on a listing say more than the word hound.
