Fox Terrier usually refers to two closely related breeds, the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Wire Fox Terrier, which share a body and a personality but differ in coat. Both were developed in Britain to ride along on foxhunts and bolt foxes from their dens, which is why their coats are mostly white, so hounds and riders would never mistake dog for quarry. The tiny Toy Fox Terrier is a separate breed.
Fox Terriers tend to be bold, quick, funny and full of energy, with a strong prey drive and a mind of their own. They usually need daily exercise, secure fencing, a leash in open spaces and patient training that keeps things interesting. The Smooth's short coat is easy to keep, while the Wire's dense, wiry coat sheds little but needs clipping or hand-stripping, so grooming costs depend on which type you adopt.
