The Bedlington Terrier comes from the mining country around Bedlington in Northumberland, England, where miners valued it for catching vermin and running down rabbits. Its pear-shaped head, woolly topknot and arched back give it a lamb-like look, but the body underneath is lithe and fast, and Whippet ancestry is the likely source of that speed.
Most Bedlingtons are affectionate and playful at home, though a terrier streak shows when something small runs past or another dog pushes back. The crisp, curly coat sheds very little but needs regular brushing and a professional clip every six to eight weeks, which takes some planning in Jackson's humid climate. Dogs vary, and a Bedlington's history and socialization shape its behavior as much as breed does.
