Hunters in the lake country of Wisconsin and Minnesota developed the American Water Spaniel in the 1800s as a compact boat dog that could flush upland birds and retrieve ducks from cold water. It's Wisconsin's state dog and still an uncommon sporting breed. The dense coat, from tight curls to a marcel wave, comes in liver, brown or dark chocolate and sheds water well.
Many are devoted to their families, a little reserved with strangers, clever and sensitive, and some are vocal. Gentle, consistent training works better than harsh correction, and the youthful streak often lasts a couple of years. In Jackson's humid climate, plan on regular brushing and ear checks, plus a daily outlet for all that stamina. Dogs vary, so each dog's own personality matters more than the breed label.
