The American Hairless Terrier is an American original. The first hairless pup, Josephine, was born in Louisiana in 1972 to a litter of coated Rat Terriers, and her descendants became a breed the AKC recognized in 2016. Its Gulf South roots sit close to Jackson, though a hairless dog still needs protection from both sun and cold. A coated variety also exists, with a short, smooth coat and fewer skin worries.
Most weigh 12 to 28 pounds and stand 12 to 16 inches tall. They tend to be alert, playful and quick learners, with terrier habits like digging and chasing. Care centers on skin: gentle baths, sunscreen, a sweater when it's cold and regular checks for scrapes. Temperament varies from dog to dog, so watch how each one handles new sounds, people and other pets.
