The Affenpinscher started out as a ratter in German stables, kitchens and granaries. Its name means monkey pinscher, a nod to the bearded, bright-eyed face. These are compact toy dogs, usually between 7 and 12 pounds, with a harsh, shaggy coat that forms a mane around the head and shoulders, most often in black.
Many Affenpinschers are confident, curious and loyal, with far more swagger than their size suggests. They can be alert, sometimes bossy with larger dogs, and stubborn about housetraining, so patience pays off. Dogs vary, but a leash and supervised yard time suit them well in Jackson, where loose dogs and coyotes are part of the landscape.
