A chocolate Lab is a Labrador Retriever in the breed's brown coat, descended from the water retrievers of Newfoundland and refined in Britain as gun dogs. Chocolates have brown noses and eye rims, and brown or hazel eyes. Adults usually weigh 55 to 80 pounds and have a dense, weather-resistant double coat that sheds year-round.
That history shows up in a dog that loves water, fetch and company. Expect daily exercise, steady reward-based training and careful portion control, since many Labs will eat anything within reach. Color doesn't decide personality, so each dog's energy and manners matter more than its coat. Chocolates do tend to have more ear and skin trouble than other Lab colors, which makes drying ears and watching for itchy skin part of the routine in a humid climate.
