The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle sizes and the original water retriever of the family, with probable German roots. Under the show-ring clips is a square, athletic dog, over 15 inches at the shoulder and usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a dense, curly coat in solid colors from black and white to apricot and silver.
Standards are clever, sensitive and people-focused, often reserved with strangers and playful at home. In Springfield that means a dog who does best with regular training, company and a mix of neighborhood walks and trail time. The low-shedding coat keeps growing, so plan on brushing several times a week between professional clips. Dogs vary, and a Standard's energy and confidence depend on age and history as much as breed.
