Shih Tzus were palace dogs, developed in China from small Tibetan dogs given to the imperial court. The name comes from the Mandarin word for lion, a nod to the lion in Buddhist art. They reached England around 1930 and the United States after World War II. Today's Shih Tzu is a sturdy toy dog of about 9 to 16 pounds, with a short square muzzle, large dark eyes and a long double coat in nearly any color.
Many are friendly, outgoing and happiest close to their people, and they usually get along with visitors and other pets. Care centers on the coat, which mats quickly without regular brushing or a trim, and on the eyes, teeth and breathing of a flat-faced dog. In Springfield, that also means a tick check after trail walks and a cool spot indoors in July.
