The Bichon Frise is a small white companion dog from the Mediterranean, kept for centuries to be good company rather than to work. The curly coat and plumed tail get the attention, but the personality is the real draw: cheerful, playful and fond of nearly everyone. Most weigh 12 to 18 pounds, which suits Springfield's older bungalows and its rental apartments alike.
Care is mostly about routine. The low-shedding coat holds loose hair, so it mats without frequent brushing and a professional groom every four to eight weeks. Dental disease, allergies and bladder stones are common enough to plan for, and some Bichons are slow to house train or fret when left alone. Dogs vary, so a Bichon may turn out mellower or livelier than the description suggests.
