The Pointer, also called the English Pointer, is a lean sporting dog developed in England to find game birds and freeze in a rigid point. Its short, glossy coat is usually white with liver, lemon, orange or black patches or ticking. Most adults weigh 45 to 75 pounds, with males running larger, and a lifespan of 12 to 15 years is typical.
At home, many Pointers are gentle, even-tempered and affectionate with their families, though some are reserved with strangers. Their stamina and nose can pull them toward squirrels and birds, which matters on St. Louis's leashed park paths. Dogs vary, and one from a hunting background may need more activity than another. Plan on secure fencing, patient reward-based training and a warm indoor place to rest.
