The Dachshund came out of Germany, where the name means "badger dog." The long body, short legs and deep chest were built for following quarry underground, and the oversized bark carried above ground. There are two AKC sizes, standard and miniature, and three coats: smooth, longhaired and wirehaired, in colors from red and black and tan to dapple and piebald.
Many Dachshunds are clever, curious and devoted to their people, with a stubborn streak and a love of digging and chasing scents. In St. Louis, that nose gets plenty of work on park lawns and neighborhood sidewalks, so a leash and a secure yard matter. Intervertebral disc disease is the main health concern, which makes staying lean and avoiding jumping important for life.
