The Cairn Terrier comes from the Scottish Highlands, where farmers and hunters used these short-legged dogs to bolt foxes and vermin from rock piles called cairns. That history explains the broad, foxy face, small upright ears and harsh, weather-resistant double coat in wheaten, red, gray, brindle or near-black. Cairns weigh roughly 13 to 18 pounds, and the breed is best known as Toto in The Wizard of Oz.
Cairns are usually cheerful, confident and a little stubborn. Expect digging, a strong urge to chase small animals and barking when bored. The low-shedding coat needs weekly brushing plus occasional stripping or trimming. Dogs vary, so a Cairn's own personality, age and history matter as much as the breed description, and many live 13 to 15 years.
