Cattle Dog is a shelter label more than a single breed. Most dogs listed this way are Australian Cattle Dogs, known as Blue or Red Heelers, or mixes with one, though Texas Heelers and Border Collie crosses are sometimes included. The Australian Cattle Dog was developed in nineteenth-century Australia to drive cattle over long distances by nipping at their heels, which explains the stamina and toughness.
In St. Charles, that working background shows up in everyday life. Expect a medium, muscular dog of roughly 30 to 50 pounds with a short double coat, a sharp mind and a strong attachment to its people. Many are wary of strangers and try to herd bikes, kids or cats along the Katy Trail. Mixes vary in size, coat and energy, so each dog's behavior matters more than the label.
