Australian Shepherds were developed on ranches in the American West, not Australia, where their stamina and sharp minds made them prized stock dogs. Today that heritage shows in a medium-sized, athletic dog of 40 to 65 pounds with a weather-resistant double coat, usually merle, black or red, often with white and copper trim.
In St. Charles, an Aussie's coat handles the cold winters well but sheds heavily as the seasons turn, so regular brushing is part of the routine. Many Aussies are devoted to family and reserved with strangers, and they do best with adopters who enjoy training and give them daily work. Dogs vary, so the dog in front of you matters more than the breed label.
