The American Water Spaniel was developed in 19th-century Wisconsin lake country as a compact hunting companion that could work from a small boat, flush birds and retrieve from cold water. It's Wisconsin's state dog and still an uncommon sporting breed, standing 15 to 18 inches and weighing roughly 25 to 45 pounds. The dense, curly coat comes in liver, brown or chocolate and sheds water well.
Many are devoted to their families and a little reserved with strangers, and they can be clever, sensitive and vocal. They often stay playful for two or three years. In Kansas City, that means planning for daily exercise and regular brushing, and drying the coat and ears after wet outings. Every dog varies, so judge the one in front of you.
