The American Hairless Terrier is the only hairless breed developed in the United States. It began in 1972 in Louisiana, when a hairless puppy named Josephine was born into a litter of coated Rat Terriers, and the AKC recognized the breed in 2016. Hairless puppies are born with fuzz that falls out within weeks, while the coated variety has a short, smooth coat. Most adults weigh 12 to 28 pounds.
Terrier traits come through: these dogs are curious, alert and playful, with a taste for chasing and digging. Many are affectionate and quick to learn with reward-based training, though every dog differs. In Kansas City, that means leashed walks or a securely fenced yard, since a squirrel can pull a terrier off course, plus a plan for skin care through humid summers and icy winters.
