The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle varieties and the original one, developed as a water retriever, probably in Germany. Under the show clips is a square, athletic dog, usually 18 to 24 inches tall and 40 to 70 pounds, with a dense, curly coat in solids from black and white to apricot and silver.
Standards are clever, sensitive and often reserved with strangers, with a playful streak that lasts well into adulthood. The low-shedding coat never stops growing, so plan on a professional clip every six to eight weeks and brushing several times a week. In Columbia, that also means checking the coat for ticks after woods and trail time. Dogs vary, so spend time with a Standard before deciding.
