The Pomeranian descends from larger German Spitz dogs and takes its name from Pomerania, a Baltic coast region. Queen Victoria's fondness for small, colorful Poms helped shrink the breed to today's 3 to 7 pounds, though many Poms in adoption listings run heavier. A standoff double coat, a plumed tail over the back and a foxy face make the look unmistakable.
Poms are bold, curious and quick to sound the alarm. They bond closely and enjoy learning tricks, but their small frames are fragile and need gentle handling. In Rochester the thick coat is a real help in the cold, while brushing, dental care and barking training are year-round jobs. Barking and tolerance for handling vary from dog to dog, so spend time with a Pom before deciding.
