Sweden's Hamiltonstovare takes its name from Count Adolf Hamilton, founder of the Swedish Kennel Club, who showed the first examples in 1886. The breed was developed to trail hare and fox on its own, announcing the trail with its voice so hunters could follow. It's an athletic, medium-sized hound, usually 50 to 60 pounds, with a harsh, close-lying coat in black, tan and white.
Many Hamiltonstovares are friendly and good-natured with people and other dogs, though every dog varies, and the nose still leads. Daily exercise, patient training and secure fencing matter, since a fresh scent can override recall in an instant. The breed is uncommon outside Scandinavia, so a Hamiltonstovare may show up here only occasionally, and similar hounds are worth a look.
