Belgian Shepherds are one breed with four coat varieties: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the wiry Laekenois. The American Kennel Club registers them separately and calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog. Adults are typically 40 to 75 pounds, square and elegant, with upright ears and a proud head carriage.
Many Belgians have a dense, weather-resistant coat that copes with Minneapolis cold, though shedding is heavy in spring and fall. Plenty of dogs labeled Belgian Shepherds are Malinois or Malinois mixes, often the most driven of the group. They tend to bond closely with their people, so they do best with someone home a good part of the day, a training plan, and daily outings that go beyond a quick loop around the block.
