The Bedlington Terrier comes from the mining country around Bedlington in Northumberland, England, where it was prized for catching vermin and running down rabbits. Its pear-shaped head, woolly topknot and arched back give it a lamb-like look, but under the curls is a lean, fast dog with some Whippet in its past.
At home, most Bedlingtons are gentle, affectionate and fairly calm, then turn spirited the moment a squirrel bolts across a lake path. The crisp coat sheds very little but needs brushing several times a week and a professional clip about every two months. The breed also carries an inherited liver condition called copper toxicosis, so a veterinarian can advise on testing and diet. Dogs vary, and coat and energy differ from one Bedlington to the next.
