Despite the name, Great Danes are German. They descend from the boar hounds of German nobility, mastiff and greyhound-type crosses strong enough to hold a boar and fast enough to catch it. The English name comes from the French Grand Danois, and Germany settled on Deutsche Dogge in 1878. Danes stand roughly 28 to 32 inches tall, with a short coat in colors from fawn and brindle to harlequin.
Many Danes are gentle and surprisingly calm indoors, happy to lean on their people or take over the sofa. Size still shapes daily life in Westland, from the food bill to how much room the car has. Lifespans often run under ten years, and bloat and heart disease are real risks, so adopters should plan for vet care.
