Pomeranians descend from larger German Spitz dogs and take their name from Pomerania, a Baltic coast region. Queen Victoria's small sable Poms helped shrink the breed in the late 1800s, and today's dog usually weighs 3 to 7 pounds, though plenty of pet Poms run heavier. The thick double coat, plumed tail and foxy face are what most people notice first.
Under all that fluff is a bold, chatty dog that bonds closely with its people. Poms tend to bark at new sounds, and some get bossy with bigger dogs, though every dog differs. In Muskegon, expect to brush the coat several times a week, keep up with tooth care, and carry or guide a Pom over snowbanks and icy steps, since small legs and kneecaps are fragile.
