Cattle Dog is a shelter label more than a single breed. Most dogs listed this way are Australian Cattle Dogs, known as Blue or Red Heelers, or mixes with one. The breed came out of nineteenth-century Australia, where collie-type herders were crossed with dingoes to make a tough drover that moved cattle by nipping at their heels.
Expect a medium-sized, muscular dog of roughly 30 to 50 pounds with a short double coat, a sharp mind and a lot of stamina. Many bond closely with their people and stay reserved with strangers. Mixes vary in size, coat and energy, so watch how each dog behaves with you. In Muskegon, plan on a dog that's happy outdoors in the cold but needs plenty to do inside.
