Border Collies come from the hills along the Anglo-Scottish border, where shepherds wanted dogs that could gather sheep with speed, focus and very little instruction. A dog named Old Hemp, born in Northumberland in 1893, set the quiet, intense working style the breed still shows. Adults are medium-sized, usually 30 to 55 pounds, with rough or smooth double coats in black and white and many other colors.
Many are quick learners that bond closely with their families, but that intelligence needs an outlet. Without daily exercise and mental challenges, a Border Collie may invent its own jobs, such as herding children or chasing cars. In Muskegon, that means planning for trail miles and training sessions in every season. Dogs vary, so a dog's own energy and habits matter more than the breed label.
