A black Lab is a Labrador Retriever in the breed's original color, not a separate breed. The breed traces to the water dogs of Newfoundland and was refined in Britain as a gun dog, which explains the dense, water-resistant double coat, the otter tail and the love of retrieving. In Muskegon, that heritage shows up in a dog that wants to be in the water and carry something in its mouth.
Color doesn't change personality. Black Labs tend to be friendly, food-motivated and eager to please, though energy varies a lot from dog to dog, and many stay bouncy well into their second or third year. Plan on daily exercise, consistent training, measured meals and plenty of brushing when the coat sheds. Labs are drawn to snacks, so watch portions through the long indoor winter.
