Terrier is a type of dog rather than a single breed. The name comes from the Latin terra, meaning earth, because these dogs were developed over several centuries to hunt rats, foxes and other vermin, often by following them into burrows. Dozens of breeds share the label, from tiny Yorkshire Terriers to the larger Airedale, and many adoptable terriers are mixes with Jack Russell, Rat, Cairn or Schnauzer ancestry.
Most are small to medium, with wiry or smooth coats and a bold, affectionate personality. Common habits include barking, digging and chasing small animals, which is worth knowing in a city of fenced backyards, where a fence line invites all three. A dog's size, coat and energy depend on its ancestry, so spend time with the dog before deciding. The label only says so much.
