Anatolian Shepherds come from the central Turkish plateau, where they guarded sheep and goats against predators. They live alongside the flock and make their own calls, so they tend to be thoughtful rather than eager to please. Adults are large, often 80 to 150 pounds, with a short to medium double coat that is usually fawn with a dark mask.
In Livonia, that guardian streak shows up as watchfulness over the yard, the driveway and the family. Many Anatolians are gentle at home but wary of visitors, so delivery drivers, neighbors and other dogs all need steady, calm introductions. They mature slowly, often not until two or three years old, and they respond poorly to harsh handling. Patient, consistent training works best.
