American Staffordshire Terriers descend from the bull-and-terrier dogs that came to the United States from Britain in the 1800s, and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1936. They're stocky, muscular, medium-sized dogs, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a broad head, pronounced cheeks and a short glossy coat in almost any color. Shedding is moderate, and the coat needs little more than an occasional brush.
Many AmStaffs are confident, affectionate and goofy with their families, and they often lean on or climb onto a favorite person. They're also strong and determined, so training and leash manners are worth starting early. Some are selective about other dogs even with good socialization, which matters where leashed dog walkers share sidewalks and park paths. Dogs vary, so spend time with the one you're considering.
