Pugs began as companions at the Chinese imperial court, and Dutch traders brought them to Europe in the sixteenth century, where they became favorites of the House of Orange and later Queen Victoria. The modern Pug is square and sturdy, with a round head, deep wrinkles, big dark eyes and a tail curled over the hip, usually in fawn or black. Typical weight is 14 to 18 pounds, though many pets run heavier.
Most Pugs are even-tempered, funny and devoted, and they follow their people from room to room. The flat face limits breathing, so heat, hard exercise and extra weight are real risks. Shedding is heavy despite the short coat, and skin folds and prominent eyes need regular attention. Lifespan estimates run from about 11 to 15 years, and every dog varies.
