The Jack Russell Terrier takes its name from Reverend John Russell, a nineteenth-century Devon parson who bred fox-working terriers. Today's dogs are compact and mostly white with black or tan markings, about 10 to 15 inches tall and 13 to 18 pounds, with smooth, broken or rough coats. The taller type is registered in the United States as the Parson Russell Terrier.
Many are bold, clever and funny, with a strong prey drive and a talent for digging, climbing and escaping. In Grand Rapids that means a secure leash on river trails and fences that get checked often. They suit active people who enjoy training and outdoor time, and they're rarely couch dogs. Many Jacks end up in shelters because their energy was underestimated.
