Nicknamed "The People's Choice," the Treeing Walker Coonhound grew out of Virginia and Kentucky foxhound lines in the 1700s and 1800s, refined by hunters who wanted a fast hound that would trail a raccoon and hold it up a tree. The United Kennel Club recognized it as a separate breed in 1945, and the AKC followed in 2012. Its glossy tricolor coat, long ears and gentle, pleading eyes are instantly recognizable.
Walkers are speedy, tireless and loud on the trail, with a ringing bay that changes to a rapid chop at the tree. At home, many are sweet, sociable and happy to share the couch. They need plenty of daily exercise, a leash in open areas, solid fencing and an owner who finds a booming voice and a nose-first attitude charming rather than frustrating.
