The Beauceron is France's largest native herding dog, developed on the plains around Chartres to move and guard big flocks over long distances. Its short, weatherproof black-and-tan or harlequin coat, tan "red stockings" and double hind dewclaws all come from that hardy working life. Adults typically weigh 70 to 110 pounds and stand 24 to 28 inches tall.
Beaucerons are usually intelligent, confident and deeply loyal, but reserved with strangers, and many bond closely with one or two people. They mature slowly, often not settling until around age three, so adopters need time for daily exercise, ongoing socialization and calm, consistent training. In Baltimore, that means building a routine around leashed trail loops and a plan for a dog that will happily watch the street from the front window.
