The Black Mouth Cur is a Southern working dog, developed to tree squirrels and raccoons, bay hogs, move cattle and guard the homestead. Most have a short red, yellow, fawn or brindle coat and the dark muzzle behind the name. Adults typically weigh 40 to 95 pounds, and the short coat sheds moderately all year.
That history shows up in everyday life. A cur wants a purposeful routine, such as scent games at home, training sessions or a long hike. Many are devoted and protective with family and wary of strangers, and they respond best to calm, consistent, reward-based handling. Prey drive can be strong around cats and small animals, and every dog varies in energy and temperament.
