Australian Cattle Dogs, also called Blue Heelers or Queensland Heelers, were developed in nineteenth-century Australia to move cattle across long, hot distances. They're compact, muscular dogs of about 35 to 50 pounds with a short, weatherproof double coat in blue or red speckle, and they often live 12 to 16 years.
Heelers are alert, quick learners that tend to bond closely with one person. The same herding drive that made them good workers can show up as nipping at heels, chasing bikes or bossing other pets. Many do best with a job to do, such as training games, scent work or agility. Temperament varies from dog to dog, so how a Heeler was raised and exercised matters as much as the breed.
