The American Bully was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, mostly from the American Pit Bull Terrier, with American Staffordshire Terrier and bulldog breeds mixed in. The aim was a companion with a heavier, more muscular frame and a people-loving nature. The UKC recognizes the breed, though the AKC does not. Bullies come in Pocket, Standard, Classic and XL sizes, in nearly any color.
Many are affectionate, eager to please and happiest next to their people, though training and each dog's history shape behavior more than looks do. In Annapolis, that means solid leash manners on busy downtown sidewalks, gradual introductions to other dogs, and keeping a muscular build lean. The short coat sheds lightly to moderately and is easy to care for, but heavier dogs overheat quickly in humid weather.
