The Toy Fox Terrier is an American breed, developed in the early 1900s by crossing small Smooth Fox Terriers with toy breeds to get a pocket-sized ratter that still had a real terrier's grit. Farmers used these dogs to keep barns free of rodents, and their quick wits later made them circus favorites. The breed weighs only a few pounds, with a satiny, mostly white coat, a black, chocolate or tan head, upright pointed ears and a short, high-set tail.
Many Toy Fox Terriers are bright, playful and devoted, with plenty of confidence for their size. They often learn quickly and keep a comic, busy energy all their lives. They can be bossy, barky and fast on the trail of anything small that moves, and their thin coat and tiny frame call for warmth and careful handling around rough play.
