The Malinois is the short-haired fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, named for the Belgian region around Mechelen. It's a lean, square dog, usually 40 to 80 pounds, with a black mask, erect ears and a weather-resistant double coat. The AKC lists the four Belgian varieties as separate breeds, while most registries treat them as one, so a New Orleans dog may be labeled Malinois, Belgian Shepherd or a fawn mix.
Police and military units prize Malinois for speed, focus and drive, and those same traits make them demanding at home. Many are devoted and sensitive, but a bored dog can turn frantic, destructive or reactive, and dogs vary widely. Parade crowds, sirens and fireworks around New Year's and July 4 are real tests for an alert dog, so early, calm socialization pays off.
