The Beauceron is France's largest native herding dog, developed on the plains around Chartres to move and guard big flocks over long distances. Its short, weatherproof black-and-tan or harlequin coat, tan "red stockings" and double dewclaws on each hind leg all come from that hardy working life. The breed also served as messenger and sentry dogs in both world wars.
Beaucerons are typically intelligent, confident and devoted to their family, though reserved with strangers, and many don't settle until around age three. In NOLA, that means steady socialization to busy sidewalks, brass bands and parade noise, plus daily exercise that works around the heat. Dogs vary, so the dog in front of you matters more than the breed description.
