The Appenzeller Sennenhund comes from the Appenzell region of northeastern Switzerland, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. It's a medium-sized, muscular dog, usually 48 to 70 pounds, with a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings and a tail curled over its back.
Appenzellers tend to be lively, alert and reserved with strangers, and devoted to their own people. Bred to work all day, they usually need steady exercise, training and a real job. In New Orleans that means a daily routine built around the heat, plus patience with a dog that may announce every passerby. Dogs vary, so get to know the dog in front of you rather than relying on the breed description.
