The American Water Spaniel was developed in the lake country of Wisconsin in the nineteenth century as a compact hunting partner that could fit in a small boat, flush birds and retrieve from cold water. It's Wisconsin's state dog and still an uncommon sight. Adults usually weigh 25 to 45 pounds and stand 15 to 18 inches tall, with a dense curly or wavy coat in liver, brown or chocolate.
Many are affectionate and attached to their family, a bit reserved with strangers, and quick to announce visitors. They're smart and sensitive, so calm, reward-based training works best, and they often stay playful until two or three years old. In New Orleans, the main care questions are keeping that coat brushed and dry in humid air, finding safe ways to burn off energy, and planning for heat.
