The Affenpinscher began as a ratter in German stables, kitchens and granaries. Its name means monkey pinscher, a nod to the bearded, bright-eyed face the French call the moustached little devil. Adults are compact toy dogs, usually 7 to 12 pounds, with a harsh, shaggy coat that forms a mane around the head and shoulders, most often black.
Many Affenpinschers are confident, curious and comically serious, with more swagger than their size suggests. They tend to be loyal and playful with their people, alert to every noise, and sometimes bossy with larger dogs. In NOLA, a small dog with a low-shedding coat fits compact rentals well, though the coat still needs regular combing in the humidity. They suit adults or families with older children who can be patient with housetraining, and each dog's personality varies.
