The Parson Russell Terrier takes its name from the Reverend John Russell, a Devon hunting parson who wanted a white terrier with legs long enough to keep up with foxhounds. Today's Parson is the longer-legged, square-built cousin of the Jack Russell, about 13 to 15 inches tall and 13 to 17 pounds, with a smooth or broken coat that is mostly white with black or tan markings.
Many Parsons are bold, friendly and very affectionate at home, with energy that seems to have no off switch. They dig, chase, bark and invent their own fun when bored, and some are scrappy with other dogs. In Baton Rouge, where squirrels and other wildlife are everywhere, that prey drive means a leash outside the fence. Dogs vary, so spend time with a Parson before deciding.
