The Catahoula Leopard Dog was developed in Louisiana's swamps and woods to find and hold feral hogs and gather semi-wild cattle, so it's a working dog first. Adults usually weigh 50 to 95 pounds and have a short, close coat in colors ranging from merle to brindle to solid. The coat sheds moderately and needs only regular brushing.
In Baton Rouge, that heritage shows up as a dog that wants a job and a secure fence. Catahoulas are often devoted to their family, wary of strangers and sometimes selective with other dogs or small animals. Many dogs labeled Catahoula are mixes, so a dog's own personality and energy matter more than the label. Early socialization and steady, reward-based training help a great deal.
