The Carolina Dog, sometimes called the American Dingo, is a lean, primitive-looking dog with tall pointed ears, a fishhook tail and a ginger or buff coat. Free-ranging dogs of this type lived in the pine forests and swamps of the Southeast, the same kind of humid, wooded country Baton Rouge sits in. Biologist I. Lehr Brisbin drew attention to them in the 1970s.
Carolina Dogs tend to be alert, clever and closely bonded to their families, while staying shy with strangers. That cleverness can show up as digging or fence-testing, and the coat sheds more as the seasons change. Many dogs in shelters are labeled Carolina Dogs by appearance alone, so a dog's actual behavior tells you more than the label. Some need patience while they settle in.
