The Bedlington Terrier comes from the mining country around Bedlington in Northumberland, England, where it hunted vermin and ran down rabbits. The pear-shaped head, woolly topknot and arched back give it a lamb-like look, but the body underneath is lean, fast and sturdy, with some Whippet speed in the mix. Adults usually weigh 17 to 23 pounds.
Most Bedlingtons are affectionate, playful and calm indoors, though terrier determination shows up when something small runs by. The crisp, curly coat sheds very little, yet it needs brushing several times a week and a professional clip every couple of months. Copper toxicosis, an inherited liver condition, is the breed's best-known health concern, so a veterinarian's guidance on diet and liver checks matters. In Louisville, plan for grooming and a secure place to run.
