Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the high plateau of central Turkey, where dogs of this type have protected flocks from wolves for thousands of years. They live alongside their animals and decide for themselves when to step in. Adults are big and rangy, often 80 to 150 pounds, with a short to medium fawn coat and a dark mask, though many colors occur.
In a home, most Anatolians are calm, watchful and loyal to their family, but the guarding instincts stay strong. Many are wary of strangers, protective of their territory and inclined to roam past weak fencing. They mature slowly, think for themselves and respond poorly to harsh handling. In Louisville, that means planning for a tall fence, steady socialization and neighbors who may hear an overnight bark.
