The Miniature Dachshund is the smaller of the Dachshund's two official sizes rather than a separate breed, weighing 11 pounds or less as an adult. German hunters scaled the badger dog down so it could follow rabbits and other small game into narrow burrows, and the long back, short legs, deep chest and loud bark all come from that underground work. Minis appear in smooth, longhaired and wirehaired coats and a wide range of colors and patterns.
Many Minis are clever, bold and devoted to their people, with a stubborn streak and a nose that pulls them toward every interesting smell. They often attach strongly to one person and can be wary of strangers or vocal about visitors. Their spine needs real protection: a lean body, ramps instead of jumps and careful handling matter as much as daily walks and patient house-training.
