Terrier is a type of dog rather than a single breed. The name comes from the Latin terra, meaning earth, because these dogs were developed over several centuries to hunt rats, foxes and other vermin, often by going into burrows. Dozens of breeds share the label, and adoption listings also use it for dogs that look terrier-like but have mixed ancestry, such as Jack Russell, Rat, Cairn or Schnauzer mixes.
Most adoptable terriers are small to medium, between about 10 and 35 pounds, with wiry or smooth coats and a confident outlook. Many are affectionate, loyal companions with big personalities, though barking, digging, chasing small animals and a stubborn streak are common. In Bowling Green, that means a dog who does best with a routine, a secure yard or a good leash, and a household that enjoys training. Size, coat and energy vary from dog to dog.
